| Summary, etc. | Les Gesta episcoporum Cameracensium présentent à la fois le récit de l’histoire d’une lignée épiscopale, et un assemblage d’épisodes légitimant la politique de celui qui a commandité le texte. Cependant, une analyse de la structure, du contenu et du contexte littéraire, ecclésiastique et politique de cette œuvre montre qu’elle va bien au-delà : les Gesta sont clairement construits dans le but de fonctionner en tandem avec une série d’autres textes et d’autres actions. Cette constatation conduit à deux conclusions. D’abord, les Gesta cambrésiens ne forment pas un genre autonome, mais participent à une entreprise d’autoreprésentation épiscopale inter-médiale. D’autre part, les Gesta de Cambrai ne constituent pas seulement un moyen de représenter une autorité particulière, mais un instrument pour articuler, voire construire, une vision spécifique de cette autorité. L’étude montre comment le genre des gesta pouvait être employé comme un outil essentiel de la communication épiscopale. Une telle communication pouvait contribuer au renforcement de l’autorité épiscopale ; elle apportait une réponse efficace à des situations politiques, sociales et idéologiques en pleine transformation. |

| Summary, etc. | The Gesta of the bishops of Cambrai, or the literary consolidation of an episcopal discourseThe Gesta episcoporum Cameracensium present both a grand narrative history of episcopal succession in Cambrai, and a collection of episodes legitimizing contemporary episcopal politics. However, an analysis of the structure, the content, and the literary, ecclesiastical and political contexts of this work, shows how it went beyond those two purposes. The Gesta were clearly conceived to function together with a large set of other contemporary texts and deeds. This observation leads to two conclusions. First, the Cambresian gesta were not an autonomous genre, but participated in an inter-medial episcopal self-representation. Second, these Gesta did not only serve to describe particular episcopal representations, they were also a tool for articulating and even constructing specific interpretations of episcopal authority. In general, the Gesta illustrate how this genre could be employed as an essential instrument of episcopal communication. Such a multiplex communication could establish a much more stable episcopal authority, one that could better respond to rapidly changing political, social and even ideological local contexts. |
