Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Bronze Age circular funerary monuments at « Le Champ Bel Air », Dainville (Pas-de-Calais)An excavation conducted at « Le Champ Bel Air » in the municipality of Dainville, to the west of Arras enabled two circular funerary monuments to be explored. The analysis of the filling within the ditch of the larger monument points towards the former existence of an outside embankment in that case. Three graves were discovered inside the larger circular feature. These comprised small grave-pits containing cremation burials, specifically the partial remains of the deceased and the remains of the funerary pyre. The graves were radiocarbon dated, with the earliest dates from the Middle Bronze Age and the latest from the beginning of the Late Bronze Age. According to our preliminary hypothesis, the circular monuments were probably erected sometime between the fifteenth and fourteenth centuries BC, and used until sometime between the thirteenth and eleventh centuries BC. The information forthcoming from the work at these two new structures complements the corpus of Bronze Age circular funerary monuments in the Arras region, and can be linked to the cultural group of « Manche-Mer du Nord » (MMN). |
