| Summary, etc. | La création de l’École supérieure de Guerre en 1876 répond aux leçons tirées de la défaite contre la Prusse en 1871. L’École a eu pour mission de préparer les officiers à la tactique et a été ainsi un creuset de réflexion doctrinale majeur dont Foch en est un archétype. De fait, la formation dispensée par l’ESG a fortement influencé le commandement français durant la Grande Guerre. |

| Summary, etc. | The creation of the École supérieure de Guerre (Senior War College) in 1876 was the response to lessons learned from the defeat by Prussia in 1871. The College’s mission was to train officers in tactics: it became a melting pot of doctrinal thought, Foch being a prime example of its output. Training at the College strongly influenced French command during the Great War. |
