Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Roman copper tableware found in Bavay137 copper alloy vessels have been found in Bavay of which 80 seem worthy of our immediate study. This research sheds a new light on the elite’s consumption, thanks to the comparison between different cities (Reims, Trier, Avenches and Pompeii) and other materials (glass and ceramics). The bulk of the Bavay bronze vessels, as with Reims, had been manufactured during the 2nd century and the first part of the 3rd century. This situation is very different in Trier or Avenches where copperware dates back to the 1st century. Nervian copper vessels are mostly used for tableware, as a token of ostentation. This kind of use is to be found in other cities of Roman Gaul (Reims, Trier and Avenches) but not in Italy (Pompeii) where a cooking function is also represented. |
