| Summary, etc. | Maximilien de Berghes (1518-1570), évêque (1556-1559) puis archevêque de Cambrai (1559-1570) tient une place non négligeable dans les études consacrées à l’Église des anciens Pays-Bas au xvie siècle. En 1564, Berghes prit l’initiative de convoquer un conseil d’évêques locaux au sujet de la publication du Concile de Trente, bien qu’il ne fût jamais un prélat ni une personnalité de la dimension de Charles Borromée. Il le fit à nouveau en 1565, en étant le premier dans les Pays-Bas à organiser un concile provincial pour l’application des décrets de Trente, imitant ainsi son collègue et compétiteur de Reims, le fameux cardinal de Lorraine. Plutôt qu’un Borromée local de la Contre-Réforme, Maximilien était simplement un évêque dont le rayon d’action était avant tout déterminé par le contexte transrégional, à la frontière entre les Pays-Bas des Habsbourg et la France. |

Maximilien de Berghes (arch)bishop of Cambrai and the promulgation of the Council of Trent (1564-1567)Maximilien de Berghes (1518-1570), Bishop (1556-1559) and then Archbishop of Cambrai (1559-1570), has been mentioned frequently within the church history of the sixteenth-century Low Countries. In 1564, Berghes took the initiative to convoke a meeting of local bishops in order to discuss the promulgation of the decrees of the recently concluded Council of Trent. In 1565, he was the first prelate in the Low Countries to convoke a provincial concil in order to introduce and implement the Tridentine decrees, imitating the example of his colleague and competitor in Reims, the more famous Cardinal de Lorraine. More than a local Borromeo of the Counter-Reform, he remained a bishop whose powerand influence was primarily determined by the transregional context of his surroundings, which conveniently placed him between Mechelen and Reims, and at the border that separated the Low Countries and France. |
