| Summary, etc. | Notre hypothèse est que Luther et Rembrandt appartiennent à un même courant de pensée qui s’enracine dans l’interprétation que Paul donne de l’Incarnation : la kénose. Celle-ci affirme que le Christ s’est dépouillé de ses privilèges divins par amour de l’humanité. Le dialogue que nous construisons entre les deux démarches a pour premier enjeu de montrer leurs parentés théoriques et structurelles. Pour le réformateur comme pour le graveur, les images oxymoriques sont nécessaires à la connaissance divine. Verbales ou visuelles, ces images contribuent à révéler un Dieu proche mais caché, ce qui exige l’éveil de la foi. Notre examen fait ainsi apparaître comment la pratique de graveur de Rembrandt aide à dépasser l’idée de liberté de Luther, difficile à concilier avec la puissance divine. Tentant de se déposséder des procédés trop bien maîtrisés, le graveur travaille à rendre sa raison aveugle pour accueillir la Grâce. |

| Summary, etc. | Luther and Rembrandt : views on kenosisOur hypothesis is that Luther and Rembrandt belong to the spiritual tradition of kenosis, which was inherited from Paul’s interpretation of Incarnation. According to the kenosis, Christ renounced his divine privileges for the love of humanity. By comparing both approaches, we aim at showing their theoretical and structural similarities. According to Luther as well as Rembrandt, we need oxymoric images in order to know God. Visual and verbal images can be useful in revealing a God that is close to us yet concealed from our view. Our study also aims at showing how Rembrandt’s practice as an etcher may help to resolve a central difficulty in Luther’s thought : the reconciliation of his idea of freedom with the idea of the power of God. By trying to divest himself of the burden of his own technical mastery, the etcher attempts to quieten his blinding reason in order to allow grace to enter. |
