520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The fall of the Soviet empire and independence of Latvia at the end of the 1980s led, inside the country, to several political changes which an impact on the Jewish community. This period was marked by the massive emigration of Jews to Israel and the United States in particular, and by the emergence of community life, which had been forbidden during the Soviet era. How has the self-identification of Latvian Jews changed in the new societies where they are dwelling? The principal indicator used for this study is religious and civic holidays, whether traditional or adopted by this group after the breakup of the USSR. |
