| Summary, etc. | Aux xvie et xviie siècles, les anciens Pays-Bas sont le théâtre d’une guerre civile et confessionnelle. De prime abord, la Révolte (1568-1648) semble déboucher sur une frontière confessionnelle nette, séparant de part et d’autre de la Dorsale catholique les Provinces-Unies calvinistes et les Pays-Bas espagnols catholiques. Or, la réalité est plus nuancée, car la société des Provinces-Unies est pluriconfessionnelle. Dans cette République, où l’organisation ecclésiastique catholique a été systématiquement démantelée, une part importante de la population demeure néanmoins catholique. Dans ce contexte, où la liberté de conscience est respectée, mais où la liberté de culte n’existe pas, les Klopjes, femmes laïques héritières du mouvement béguinal, dévouées au catholicisme et à l’Église tridentine, assurent une présence active, voire publique, de l’ancienne Église. En cela, et par leur nombre, elles jouent un rôle capital, mais longtemps sous-exposé, dans la survie du catholicisme néerlandais, en épaulant un clergé (masculin) peu nombreux et condamné à la clandestinité. |

| Summary, etc. | During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Low Countries were in the midst of a longlasting civil and religious war. The Dutch Revolt (1568-1648) seems to have resulted in a clear confessional boundary, dividing the Calvinist United Provinces and the Catholic Spanish Netherlands. However, the reality was more complex, since Dutch society was multi-confessional. In the Dutch Republic, where the Roman Catholic Church was systematically dismantled, a substantial part of the population nevertheless remained Catholic. In this context, where the liberty of conscience was implemented but where no freedom of worship existed, the Klopjes, heirs of the Beguines devoted to Catholicism and the Tridentine Church, allowed an active – and to some extent even public – presence of the ancient Church. In this manner, and because of their number, they played a pivotal albeit hitherto largely unexamined role in the survival of Dutch Catholicism, by supporting a scarce and clandestine (male) clergy. |
