| Summary, etc. | Lorsque la guerre éclate en août 1914, Étaples est un petit port de pêche de 5 000 âmes. Trois ans plus tard, le lieu est devenu un gigantesque camp militaire britannique. Que reste-il de ce camp centenaire si peu étudié ? Cette étude porte sur la dimension archéologique d u site. Elle est fondée principalement sur l’examen et la numérisation du plan Falcon de juillet 1917, dont il subsiste un tirage diazo, un « bleu », conservé au musée Quentovic d’Étaples. Le diagnostic est complété par des données issues de fouilles préventives, de prospections de surface, ou d’explorations souterraines. Ces témoins matériels constituent la base d’un corpus archéologique propre à documenter les différents aspects et temporalités du camp. La tonalité bleue de cet examen archéologique est également une référence aux travailleurs chinois – la couleur de leur uniforme. De rares artefacts de ces « coolies » sont présentés. Ils témoignent du caractère cosmopolite du camp. |

| Summary, etc. | At the beginning of World War One, in August 1914, Etaples, on the north coast of France, was a small fishing port of about 5 000 people. Three years later, it housed the largest base camp built by the British during the whole war. What is left of this century-old camp so understudied ? Our study focuses on the archaeological aspect of the site. It is based mainly on the examination and digitization of the Flacon plan of July 1917 of which a diazo print (cf. blueprint), is preserved in Quentovic Museum. This plan shows every military installation in place at the time. The information contained in this blueprint is supplemented by data from excavations in advance of development work, surface prospecting, and deep underground exploration. Together these evidence types constitute the basis of an archaeological corpus that enables the functions and life of the camp to be documented. And ‘blue’ also points to the cosmopolitan character of the millions who spent time at Etaples : blue uniforms were worn by thousands of ‘coolies’ brought over from China to work at the camp. |
