| Summary, etc. | The foundation of a hospital was not an inconsiderate act for the princes and princesses of the late Middle Ages. It’s as much the reflection of their political ambitions ans personal aspirations as it is an assurance of salvation. However, in spite of the practices of her time, Mahaut, Countess of Artois (1302-1329), was only late in setting up a series of charitable foundations. In 1318, his second will set out his wish to build a new institution in the heart of the town of Hesdin, the Saint John’s hospital, which welcomed its first patients in July 1323. A marker of piety and charity, the hospital also crystallized a return to political control and an anchoring in dynastic practices. |

| Summary, etc. | Fonder un hôpital n’est pas un geste anodin pour les princes et les princesses de la fin du Moyen Âge. Il est autant le reflet de leurs ambitions politiques et de leurs aspirations personnelles qu’une assurance de salut. Néanmoins, en dépit des pratiques de son temps, Mahaut, comtesse d’Artois (1302-1329), ne s’investit que tardivement dans la constitution d’un programme de fondations charitables. En 1318, son second testament énonce le souhait de bâtir une nouvelle institution au cœur de la ville d’Hesdin, l’hôpital Saint-Jean, qui accueillera ses premières patientèles en juillet 1323. Marqueur de piété et de charité, l’hôtel-Dieu cristallise aussi une reprise en main politique et un ancrage dans des pratiques dynastiques. |
