| Summary, etc. | RésuméBien qu’utiles pour comprendre l’échec scolaire, les études traitant de l’impact des conditions de vie des enfants sur leur réussite scolaire sont encore assez rares en France. Nous mobilisons ici l’enquête « Budget de famille 2000/2001 » pour mesurer l’impact causal du chômage des parents. Les enfants dont le père a connu le chômage obtiennent moins souvent un baccalauréat : l’écart de 20 points s’explique pour moitié par l’effet propre du chômage, et pour moitié par des effets de structure. Pour corriger les éventuels biais d’endogénéité, nous instrumentons le chômage par la catégorie socioprofessionnelle du grand-père et montrons que la corrélation entre précarité et difficultés scolaires correspond bien à une causalité. |

| Summary, etc. | The impact of living conditions on the educational achievements of children in France has been under-studied by economists. In this paper, we use the French survey « Budget de Famille 2000/2001 » to show the causal impact of the unemployment of the parents. When the father has been unemployed for a long time the children see their chances of achieving « baccalauréat » reduced by 20-percentage point; half of this difference is explained by the specific effect of unemployment. To control for potential endogeneity, we instrument unemployment by the occupational status of the grandfather and show that the correlation between father’s unemployment and the child’s educational achievements corresponds to a causal relationship. |
