| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes pouvoirs publics, représentés par la Mission Interministérielle à la Lutte contre la Drogue et les Toxicomanies (MILDT), considèrent que la prévention par l’information est un moyen efficace de lutte contre le tabagisme juvénile. Devrait-on alors privilégier quelques relais précis pour les campagnes de prévention ? Dans cet article, nous mesurons l’impact de différentes sources d’information sur la consommation de tabac des adolescents scolarisés en France, à l’aide de données de l’INSERM. Nous montrons que les relais traditionnels de l’action sanitaire publique, comme les médecins et l’école, n’assurent pas de prévention primaire du risque tabagique. Ce dernier est lié à des hétérogénéités inobservables fortement corrélées au moral du jeune. La prévention du tabagisme passe donc avant tout par une détection des jeunes en situation de détresse psychologique. |

| Summary, etc. | In this paper, we measure the impact of a number of information providers on youth smoking. Using French epidemiological data on the health and lifestyles of teenagers in secondary schools, we estimate a Box-Cox double-hurdle model of tobacco consumption, where the information variables are instrumented. We find little evidence of preventative effects of any information provider on youth smoking. Other results seem counterintuitive. For instance, school nurses and gynaecologists have a positive effect on both participation and addiction risk. We use the generalised residuals of our participation equations to show that, indeed, these information variables are correlated with smoking behaviour through unobservable heterogeneities. These latter are closely related to the risk-aversion and the intertemporal preferences of teenagers.Classification JEL : C24, D83, I12, I18 |
