| Summary, etc. | L’objet de cet article est d’appliquer la théorie des tournois aux joueurs du tennis professionnel masculin. Deux nouveaux indicateurs de mesure de la performance des joueurs sont introduits, afin de prendre en compte le niveau de l’opposition. Les estimations économétriques sont effectuées, par la méthode des Moindres Carrés Ordinaires, sur l’ensemble des tournois disputés par les 30 meilleurs joueurs classés à l’ATP au cours de l’année 2007. Les résultats obtenus valident bien, conformément à une des prédictions de la théorie des tournois, l’existence d’un effet incitatif associé à la performance, à savoir qu’une structure de prix inégalitaire entre les tours du tournoi augmente la performance des joueurs. En revanche, l’effet participatif n’est pas confirmé : la dotation monétaire globale du tournoi ne détermine pas le niveau de performance du joueur. |

| Summary, etc. | Tournament Theory Applied on Professional Tennis Players: Can we still talk of performance incentives?The purpose of this paper is to apply the tournament theory on professional male tennis players. Two new performance indicators are introduced, to take into account the opponent level. Empirical tests are conducted, by using the Ordinary Least Squares method, on the whole tournaments played by the best ATP 30 players, over the season 2007. Econometric results confirm the tournament theory incentive effect, namely, an undistributed prize structure between tournament levels, increase the player performance. However, the participative effect is rejected: the overall tournament prize money does not induce better player performance. |
