| Summary, etc. | Le travail constitue un objet d’étude majeur de l’économiste John R. Commons. L’objectif de cet article est d’interroger la mesure dans laquelle la perspective de Commons offre un cadre théorique éclairant l’importance que peut avoir le travail dans la vie humaine individuelle et collective, à rebours de la conception instrumentale du travail dominante en économie. En nous focalisant surtout sur les travaux de l’auteur menés entre 1901 et 1919 ainsi que sur ceux écrits ultérieurement dans une perspective davantage théorique, nous montrons que Commons considère le travail comme une activité fondamentale du point de vue psychologique et surtout politique à travers sa défense de la « démocratie industrielle ». Il apparaît alors comme un promoteur de la thèse de la « centralité du travail » peu présente chez les économistes.Classification JEL : B15, B25, J53. |

| Summary, etc. | Work is a major subject of study by the economist John R. Commons. The objective of this article is to question the extent to which Commons’s perspective offers a theoretical framework that sheds light on the importance of work in individual and collective human life, in contrast to the instrumental conception of work that is dominant in economics. Focusing mainly on the author’s writings between 1901 and 1919, as well as on later works written from a more theoretical perspective, we show that Commons considers work as a fundamental activity from a psychological and, above all, political point of view through its defense of “industrial democracy.” He then appears as a promoter of the thesis of the “centrality of work,” which is not very present among economists. |
