Summary, etc. | La relation entre la distance de navettage et la forme urbaine intéresse chercheurs et planificateurs depuis longtemps. Cependant, elle demeure à ce jour difficile à cerner, probablement à cause des difficultés associées à sa formalisation théorique. Dans cet article, le concept de « possibilité de navettage » est introduit afin de clarifier cette confusion. Selon le cadre théorique proposé, la forme urbaine constitue l’offre des possibilités de navettage parmi lesquelles les travailleurs sont amenés à choisir. La validité de ce cadre est confirmée par des analyses effectuées sur des régions métropolitaines étasuniennes et des groupes de travailleurs montréalais. |

Summary, etc. | Urban form, commuting distance and commuting possibilities The relationship between commuting distance and urban form has attracted the attention of researchers and planners for a long time. However, the relationship has remained difficult to grasp, in part because of difficulties associated with its theoretical formalization. In this paper, the concept of « commuting possibilities » is suggested in order to clarify this confusion. According to the proposed framework, urban form offers commuting possibilities and workers choose from these possibilities. The validity of the framework is confirmed by analysis conducted of selected American cities and on groups of workers in Montreal. |
