Summary, etc. | Géographie et transports publics locaux Cet article examine comment la géographie influe sur la performance des entreprises locales de transports publics en Italie. En utilisant des données sur 110 entreprises impliquées dans le transport urbain et interurbain, nous fournissons différentes estimations des frontières de coût stochastiques. Il en ressort que les variables géographiques influencent l’efficacité des entreprises. En particulier, nous constatons que le transport dans les régions métropolitaines et dans les zones de montagne révèle une perte d’efficacité de 15-21 % et de 15-18 %, respectivement. |

Summary, etc. | Geography and the local public transportThis paper investigates how geography affects the performance of local public transport firms in Italy. Using data on 110 firms involved in urban and interurban transport, we provide different estimates of stochastic cost frontiers. It emerges that geographic variables impact on the efficiency of firms. In particular, we find that transport in metropolitan areas and in mountain areas account for a loss in efficiency of 15-21 % and of 15-18 %, respectively. |
