| Summary, etc. | Ce texte entreprend d’éprouver la pertinence de « la religion en prison » en tant qu’objet sociologique à part entière. L’enjeu ici n’est pas de persévérer dans une finalité hyper-spécialisée mais de réinscrire l’étude de ce phénomène dans une perspective généraliste et décloisonnée du seul registre de la religion. Des données de première main et de plusieurs contributions couvrant l’ensemble des ressources sociales disponibles intra-muros interrogent l’incomparabilité supposée des comportements religieux vis-à-vis des autres pratiques observables en milieu carcéral. Partant, c’est bien la spécificité ontologique du religieux – souvent tenue pour acquise à défaut d’être empiriquement démontrée – qui s’avère sujette à caution, notamment lorsqu’il s’agit de mettre en lumière le phénomène massif des conversions dans la population pénale. En dernier lieu, le texte invite à mobiliser le religieux en qualité d’outil sociologique au service de l’objectivation des mécanismes de socialisation carcérale dont il demeure l’un des multiples produits. |

| Summary, etc. | This text attempts to test the relevance of “religion in prison” as a sociological object in its own right. The purpose here is not to further a hyper-specialized aim, but to restore to the study of this phenomenon a generalist perspective that breaks away from the sole register of religion. First-hand data and several contributions covering all the social resources available within the prison system question the supposed incomparability of religious behavior with the other observable practices in prison life. Consequently, it is the ontological specificity of religion—often taken for granted in the absence of empirical evidence—that proves to be questionable, particularly when it comes to highlighting the massive phenomenon of conversion among the penal population. Finally, the text invites us to mobilize the religious as a sociological tool in order to objectify the mechanisms of prison socialization, of which it remains one of the many products. |
