| Summary, etc. | L’existence d’un clivage culturel entre l’Europe du Nord protestante et l’Europe du Sud catholique est traditionnellement admise. Cet article entend confronter cette idée aux données recueillies à l’occasion de la dernière enquête European Values Study ( EVS). Le processus de sécularisation amène en effet à se demander si cette approche est toujours pertinente. Plusieurs échelles d’attitude construites sur le rapport à la famille, aux inégalités de genre et au libéralisme des mœurs établissent bien l’existence de profondes différences entre les pays de tradition protestante, catholique, mais aussi orthodoxe ou musulmane, sur le continent aujourd’hui. Ces différences résistent à la prise en compte de variables comme la religion individuelle, mais aussi les niveaux d’éducation et de revenu. Les clivages séparant les pays européens selon leur confession religieuse majoritaire apparaissent même comme le facteur de loin le plus important pour rendre compte des différences culturelles sur le continent. |

| Summary, etc. | The existence of a cultural divide between northern Protestant and southern Catholic Europe is traditionally accepted. This article puts this idea to the test by considering the data collected by the most recent European Values Study (EVS). The process of secularization indeed raises the question of whether this approach is still relevant. Several attitude scales bearing on the relationship to family, to gender inequalities, and to the liberalism of morals clearly establish the existence of deep differences between countries of Protestant, Catholic, but also Orthodox or Muslim tradition on the continent today. These differences are resistant to the consideration of variables such as individual religion, but also education and income levels. The divides separating European countries according to their prevailing religious denomination even seem to be by far the most important factor in accounting for cultural differences on the continent. |
