520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Philosophical discussion of the virtues, already begun in Antiquity, continues today. The list of virtues has grown longer over time; human excellence has universal manifestations as well as some that are specific to certain cultures, while practical reasoning on the virtues now includes a greater number of elements. Aristotle thought that people of good character could achieve happiness through the habitual use of phronesis. Later on, Kant saw the virtues as the means by which the will overcomes the temptation to not do one’s duty. Over the last half-century, starting with Anscombe, neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics has broadened the concept of good character: attention has been focused on the manner in which the emotions enrich the virtuous life.
