Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | How are sex and gender articulated as elements of identity, and to what extent do they determine it? For Butler, identity is not substantial but is rather the integration of sex into gender through repeated and ritualised performance. For his part, Ricœur also rejects a substantial identity in favour of a narrative identity based on character and promise. We will show that sex/gender belongs to character, in a relationship that can be both constitutive and unsettled. But for Ricœur, the unsettled element of gender gives rise to the second pole of identity, the promise. Butler’s valorisation of ritual and Ricœur’s emphasis on promise will lead us to question the role of men and women in the central ritual of Christian identity, the Eucharist. |
