520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This article examines the ethics of character crafted by moral theologian Stanley Hauerwas, a fervent critic of 1970s North American political liberalism and situation ethics. Drawing on Aristotle, Hauerwas develops a model of the agent-self that links the agent, agency, and action. Character corresponds to the more formal aspect of the Self and ensures the continuity of the moral life. Bringing together the virtue ethics of Alasdair MacIntyre and the ecclesiology of John Howard Yoder, Stanley Hauerwas highlights the transformative dimension of the Christian life. The approaching Kingdom of God calls for nonviolence and enables the formation of communities that embody and enact the Christian narrative, making visible to the world the very character of God. |
