| Summary, etc. | L’étude s’intéresse à la notion de « race » et à ses usages en médecine, en biologie et dans la recherche médicale aux États-Unis, de la fin du xxe siècle au début du xxie siècle. Elle essaie de dégager les raisons factuelles mais aussi théoriques pour lesquelles ces notions ont été utilisées d’abord, examinées ensuite, remises en question enfin sur le territoire des États-Unis. Elle entend ouvrir une perspective en vue d’une recherche à entreprendre sur la logique argumentative sous-jacente à tout emploi du terme « race ». Elle avance enfin l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’emploi et la fonction du terme « race » répondent à la tendance implicite d’une conception ou d’une intention classificatoires de la médecine qui veut entrer plus finement au cœur de l’individu dans ce qu’il a de plus imperceptible et de moins personnel. L’individualisation la plus extrême du traitement des maladies auquel la médecine pourrait être réduite, conduirait à la dépersonnalisation du patient en le classant dans des groupes, dont la « race » est un exemple. |

| Summary, etc. | The study examines the notion of «race» and its uses in medicine, biology and medical research in the United States from the late 20th century to the early 21st century. She tries to identify the factual but also theoretical reasons why these notions were first used, then examined, and finally questioned on the territory of the United States. It intends to open a perspective for research to be undertaken on the argumentative logic underlying any use of the term «race». Finally, it puts forward the hypothesis according to which the use and the function of the term «race» respond to the implicit tendency of a conception or of a classificatory intention of medicine which wants to enter, more precisely in the heart of the individual in what is most imperceptible and less personal. The most extreme individualization of the treatment of diseases, to which medicine could be reduced, would lead to the depersonalization of the patient by classifying him in groups, of which «race» is an example. |
