| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes inspections générales au sein de l’administration française se caractérisent au premier abord par la diversité non seulement de leur origine, de leur histoire, de leur secteur d’intervention, mais aussi de leur modèle d’organisation, de leur mode de recrutement et de leur degré de prestige. Toutefois, par-delà cette apparente hétérogénéité, il existe une unité d’ensemble liée à la nature même de l’activité d’inspection et à l’attente qui est placée dans les fonctions qu’elle remplit. À cet égard, l’activité des services d’inspections évolue, globalement, pour tous les services, dans le même sens : à savoir qu’à côté des missions d’origine que sont le contrôle et l’inspection au sens étroit, sont venus s’adjoindre, ces dernières années, d’autres missions telles que l’audit, l’évaluation et le conseil, lesquelles sont en nette augmentation. |

| Summary, etc. | Abstract— The General Inspectorates of the French Public Administration: organization, function and evolution — General Inspectorates within the French administration are characterized, at first, by the diversity not only of their origin, their history, their field of intervention, but also by their organizational model, their recruitment and their degree of prestige. However, beyond this apparent heterogeneity, General Inspectorates share a common feature linked to the very nature of their work and the expectation placed in the functions it fulfills. Activities conducted by the General Inspectorates are globally changing, for all of them, in the same direction: besides the original control and inspection missions in a narrow sense, other missions have been added in the in recent years such as audit, policy evaluation and advising decision makers and managers. These new missions are continually increasing. |
