Summary, etc. Durant les 50 dernières années, l’entreprise suédoise SKF fut confrontée à l’augmentation de la concurrence mondiale. Cet article montre comment SKF a survécu grâce à deux stratégies. Dans les années 1970, la production japonaise à bas prix fut une menace sérieuse. SKF y a résisté en recourant à une stratégie de production visant à réduire les coûts. La production fut coordonnée en Europe, chaque usine devant produire pour le marché global plutôt que pour le marché national. Dans les années 1990, la globalisation créa de nouvelles opportunités de croissance à l’échelle mondiale. SKF a alors utilisé une stratégie davantage orientée vers le marché, combinant solutions numériques et capacités de production. SKF a non seulement produit des roulements à bille, mais également des services et des connaissances. Le prix ne fut plus l’instrument privilégié pour affronter les concurrents. Présence sur le marché et relations à long terme avec les clients jouèrent un rôle plus important.

Summary, etc. During the last 50 years the Swedish company SKF has met increasing global competition. This article addresses the question of company survival by identifying two strategies of SKF. In the 1970s the Japanese low-price production became a serious threat. This was met by a production-oriented strategy, aiming to reduce costs. Production within Europe was coordinated and each factory had to produce for the global rather than the national market. In the 1990s globalization meant new opportunities to expand. SKF then used a more market-oriented strategy, combining digital solutions with bearing production. SKF produced not only bearings but also services and knowledge. Price was not the main tool for competing. Presence and long-time customer relations were more important.JEL Classification : F23, F52, L12, L16, M21, M31, N14.
