| Summary, etc. | Saint-Gobain et Pechiney se sont intéressés depuis longtemps aux activités chimiques. Dans le secteur de la chimie, durant les années 1950, il apparaît de plus en plus que les deux entreprises n’atteignaient pas la taille critique. Telle est l’origine de l’alliance Pechiney-Saint-Gobain. Au moment des années 1960, la chimie mondiale connaît des développements majeurs. Au sein des deux groupes, il devient de plus en plus nécessaire de refondre les structures pour répondre à la concurrence internationale. C’est ce qui permet de comprendre le rapprochement opéré, dès 1959, entre Pechiney et Saint-Gobain, puis, en 1961, la création d’une filiale commune. Cette filiale n’ayant pas atteint la rentabilité espérée, une cession survient en 1969, de Pechiney-Saint-Gobain à Rhône-Poulenc. Les grandes fusions de la fin des années 1960 et au début des années 1970 entraînèrent la constitution de puissants groupes contrôlant, par l’intégration, l’ensemble d’une filière technique, tel est le cas de Rhône-Poulenc, de Saint-Gobain Pont-à-Mousson et de Pechiney-Ugine-Kuhlmann. |

| Summary, etc. | Saint-Gobain and Pechiney had been long time interested in chemical activities. In the chemical sector, in the 1950s, it appears more and more that the two companies did not reach the critical size, for which reason they looked for an alliance.This is the origin of the alliance Pechiney-Saint-Gobain. The above allows us to understand the operated rapprochement, from1959, which has taken place between Pechiney and Saint-Gobain and in 1961 the creation of a joint subsidiary. But the joint subsidiary did not get the expected return, despite its innovation efforts in products and processes, and its social policy.This explains the transfer, occurred in 1969, from Pechiney-Saint-Gobain to Rhône-Poulenc. This is due to the combination of concerned companies to assert a leadership of Rhône-Poulenc throughout French chemical industry.The large and important mergers in the late 1960s and early 1970s lead to the creation of powerful groups that control, by integrating the whole technical network, as is the case of Rhône-Poulenc, Saint-Gobain Pont-à-Mousson and Pechiney-Ugine-Kuhlmann.
