| Summary, etc. | Le petit marché intérieur et le manque de matières premières forçaient le producteur d’aluminium suisse Alusuisse de franchir tôt les frontières. À la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il s’agissait d’une société intégrée verticalement et seulement 25 % de ses employés travaillaient en Suisse. En cherchant des matières premières, de l’énergie bon marché et de nouveaux marchés, Alusuisse continuait la multinationalisation et développait fort sa transformation. Après une expansion et diversification massive, financés insuffisamment, ainsi que des changements majeurs dans le secteur en 1985. Alusuisse était au bord de la faillite. Le dédoublement de la capacité d’aluminium brut, une division chimique florissante et l’entrée dans l’industrie de l’emballage la ramenèrent à la réussite. En 2000, les investisseurs financiers vendaient la société à Alcan. |

| Summary, etc. | Due to the lack of raw materials and a small domestic market, Alusuisse, founded in 1888, was forced to transgress national borders soon after it started production. Looking for raw materials, cheap energy and new markets, it went multinational and pioneered aluminium processing. At the beginning of World War II, Switzerland accounted for only 25% of the vertically integrated aluminium producer’s workforce. In 1985, as a result of a dynamic ex-pansion and diversification programme that exceeded its financial means, the group was on the brink of bankruptcy. A 50% cut in smelting capacity, a prospering chemical division and the entry into the packaging sector led Alusuisse back onto the road to success.
