Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The World Bank was one of the most powerful channels carrying ideas and funding for Asian development. However, the theory and practices of the World Bank were modified and updated during the debates between the World Bank and the borrowing countries. This paper aims at analyzing this process of “translation” in the Japanese case. In the 1950s, the World Bank experienced a drastic “economics” shift from the development-friendly view to the banker-oriented austerity. The Japanese Government “translated” the World Bank’s suggestion as if it were the prerequisite to obtain lending. Japanese firms abode to the World Bank’s conditions: in the case of Kawasaki Steel, the neo classical “economics” of the World Bank was “translated” into the Rhein-model Japanese type of capitalism.JEL Classification : N15, N85, O19 |
