Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Of all Korean groups, Samsung is by far the best known in the world. Founded in 1938 by Lee Byung Chull (1910-1987), if it remains by far the most important one in South Korea, it imperfectly reflects the canonical model of the chaebol. As a matter of facts, it offers a good example of path dependency. In a first phase of its history, from 1938 to 1969, it was first interested in trade, before taking advantage of the massive reconstruction, which resulted from the Korean War, to enter industry (textiles and the food industry). While achieving a great breakthrough in international trade, the group successfully fitted in the successive priorities of economic development in South Korea, based on exports (petrochemical, shipbuilding, automotive, construction, engineering, electronics). Thanks to electronics, but also to engineering, it broke into the international market between 1969 and 1987. On the death of Lee Byung Chull, his son Lee Kun Hee made it a powerful American-style corporation, benefiting from an intense R & D effort and a growing competitive edge in electronics. This success rests, among other things, on an original social system, which draws largely on the sources of Neo-Confucianism. At the same time, the group was able to synthesize Japanese and American technologies and management methods.JEL Classification : D22, L63, N15, N65, N85 |
