Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | After many debates about the forms of credits appropriate to the development of agriculture, and projects of credit institutions, stillborn, or inoperative, during the Restoration and Monarchy of July, the question of establish an ad hoc credit institution resurfaced at the very beginning of the Second Empire. The Crédit Foncier de France proving unsuitable for providing credit to farmers, often non-owner, the State entrusted this credit institution with the creation of a Société de Crédit agricole which was born in 1861. The latter flourished during the five first years. However, despite a certain hold by the State, which imposed on the two establishments a governor and two joint sub-governors, the latter diverted the statues of these institutions and embarked on a series of dangerous speculations as early as the mid-1860s. The speculation on the Egyptian Debt in 1875-1876 was fatal to the Société de Crédit agricole. It was put into liquidation and absorbed by its parent company. As early as 1880, the Crédit Agricole liquidation commission was housed as the Banque d’Escompte de Paris. Il 1886, the latter founded the Crédit agricole, Union des Syndicats Agricoles de France, an under-capitalized company, which was dissolved in 1901.JEL Classification : D72, D73, E59, F34, G18, G21, G33, Q14 |
