Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The IMF crisis of 1976 belongs to the long series of sterling crises after World War II that compelled the British Government to ask for foreign financial assistance in particular from the IMF. If credibility was no problem till 1965, it became a matter of concern during the second part of the 1960s and a serious problem during the 1976 crisis. This article presents the reasons why foreign investors lost confidence in sterling in 1976, which was still a reserve currency at that time, and how confidence could be restored. Il the IMF played a decisive role, countries that were to form The G10 and The BIS played an essential part too. Contrary to received wisdom, the IMF did not impose a radical change in the British government’s economic policy: this change had been largely initiated before the arrival of the IMF experts.
