| Summary, etc. | Matériau pondéreux connu pour son inertie thermique, la fonte connaît son heure de gloire architecturale au XIXe siècle dans les structures et l’ornement. Au gré des évolutions techniques, l’acier et l’aluminium, favorisés par leur légèreté et leur usinabilité, prennent l’ascendant dans ces usages. Au XXe siècle, les emplois de la fonte, plus discrets, demeurent variés. Outre un emploi dans le bâtiment pour les tuyaux de descente, elle est davantage utilisée dans l’urbanisme, sous forme de canalisations souterraines et d’accessoires de voirie. La société Pont-à-Mousson, principale productrice de fontes moulées pour les canalisations, l’urbanisme et le bâtiment, constitue un cas d’étude étayé par la variété de ses sources. Ses archives permettent d’étudier la lutte commerciale menée en faveur de son matériau. |

| Summary, etc. | Heavy material well known for its thermal inertia, cast iron has its architectural hour of glory during the 19th century in structures and ornament. With new technical developments, steel and aluminium, lighter and easier to machine, gain the upper hand in these fields. During the 20th century, use of cast iron keeps on being varied in a more discrete way. Alongside its use in construction for downcomers, it is more frequently used in urban landscape, with pipes and castings. Pont-à-Mousson corporation, main manufacturer of cast iron pipes and castings for construction and urban landscape, is a case study substantiated by varied sources.
