| Summary, etc. | À la différence des pays anglo-saxons, où l’industrie de la construction et le génie civil marquent un biais en faveur du métal, les pays continentaux européens, dont la France, recourent très largement aux bétons armé et précontraint. La France a été et demeure à la pointe de l’innovation en ces domaines, à travers des entreprises de génie civil comme Campenon Bernard (aujourd’hui Vinci) et des sociétés d’ingénierie telles que Freyssinet international STUP. Mais leurs innovations n’auraient pu voir le jour sans l‘appui d’une puissante industrie cimentière, susceptible, à l’exemple de Lafarge, de mettre au point des produits toujours plus compétitifs et, à l’instar du ductal, en mesure de concurrencer victorieusement l’acier et l’aluminium. |

| Summary, etc. | Unlike Anglo-Saxon countries, where the construction industry and civil engineering are biased towards metal, continental European countries, including France, make extensive use of reinforced and prestressed concrete. France has been and remains at the forefront of innovation in these fields, through civil engineering companies such as Campenon Bernard (now Vinci) and engineering firms such as Freyssinet International STUP. But their innovations would not have been possible without the support of a powerful cement industry, capable, like Lafarge, of developing ever more competitive products and, like ductal, able to compete victoriously with steel and aluminium.
