| Summary, etc. | Dans la nuit du samedi 7 au dimanche 8 mai 1949, sept individus, armés de mitraillettes et de révolvers, pénètrent par effraction dans l’imprimerie Prieur et Dubois à Puteaux. Ils dérobent neuf caisses contenant 225 000 coupures de billets de 500 francs marocains en instance de livraison. Il s’agit d’une commande de la banque d’État du Maroc passée via la Banque de France. L’enquête de police permet de retracer l’itinéraire d’une grande partie des billets volés en quête de blanchiment et donc de tester la crédibilité de la monnaie marocaine à la fin du protectorat. L’analyse montre que la crédibilité des billets libellés en francs marocains est indéniable aux trois échelles de l’Empire français : au Maroc, en métropole et dans le reste du monde ; mais, cette crédibilité, paradoxalement, est effective au moment même où la décolonisation s’enclenche de manière irréversible. |

| Summary, etc. | On the night of 7 to 8 May 1949, seven people armed with machine guns and guns broke and entered the printing works of Prieur and Dubois in Puteaux. They stole nine boxes with 250 000 500-French Moroccan banknotes awaiting delivery, an order of the State Bank of Morocco via the Bank of France. The police investigation enabled to trace the route of a large part of the stolen banknotes awaiting money laundering and to test the credibility of Moroccan money at the end of the French protectorate. We show that the credibility of banknotes denominated in Moroccan francs was undisputable on the three scales of the French Empire: Morocco, Mainland France and abroad ; but ironically, credibility became effective at the very time when the decolonisation process was triggered irrevocably. |
