| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse le rôle de superviseur de la Banque d’Italie vis-à-vis d’un groupe de petites et moyennes banques locales dans les années 1920-1930. Plus spécifiquement, la recherche vise à analyser : a) comment la supervision a été effectivement exercée, b) l’impact de la supervision sur les banques ; c) l’impact de la supervision sur le marché du crédit local. L’analyse - basée sur des documents d’archives - est menée au niveau microéconomique, en se concentrant sur les banques individuelles dans une zone géographique donnée (le nord-est de l’Italie), mais elle est également intégrée dans le tableau macroéconomique plus large. L’article montre que, suite à l’introduction des nouvelles règles, le système bancaire local a été reconfiguré sur le plan quantitatif et qualitatif. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper analyses the Bank of Italy’s supervision role vis-à-vis a group of small and medium-sized local banks in the 1920s-1930s. More specifically, the research aims at analyzing: a) how the supervision was actually exercised, b) the supervision’s impacts on the banks; c) the supervision’s impacts on the local credit market. The analysis – based on archival documents – is conducted at the micro level, focusing on individual banks in a given geographical area (North East of Italy), but it is still embedded in the macroeconomic broader picture. The article shows that, following the introduction of the new rules, the local banking system was reconfigured on a quantitative and qualitative level. JEL Classification : E58, G21, N24 |
