| Summary, etc. | Homme politique et fonctionnaire britannique, Sydney Olivier (1859-1943) fut également l’un des contributeurs au recueil Fabian Essays in Socialism (1889) qui visait à justifier le socialisme par l’histoire. Cet article tente d’expliquer l’incompatibilité entre cette entreprise et les engagements ultérieurs d’Olivier en faveur du pragmatisme, de la réforme et de la démocratie. La critique de la propriété privée que développe l’auteur repose en effet sur une tradition positiviste qui vise à rompre avec un socialisme utopique. À travers le cas du socialisme fabien dans le contexte britannique de la fin du xixe siècle, cet article propose une réflexion sur les conditions nécessaires à la mise en œuvre de la social-démocratie. |

| Summary, etc. | British Social-democracy and positivism: Sydney Olivier’s contribution to the Fabian SocietyA British politician and civil servant, Sydney Olivier (1859-1943) was also a contributor to the Fabian Essays in Socialism (1889), in which he attempted to justify Socialism by history. The present paper tries to explain the incompatibility of such an undertaking with Olivier’s later commitments to pragmatism, reform and democracy. His criticism of private property drew on a positivist tradition intent on breaking with Utopian Socialism. Through a study of Fabian socialism within its British context, the present paper offers thoughts about the necessary conditions for the implementation of social-democracy. |
