| Summary, etc. | RésuméLoin d'être antagonique, le rapport du politique au religieux, chez Rousseau comme chez Robespierre, est intime. De la religion civile au culte de l'Être suprême, on trouve l'idée, puisée dans une culture latine commune aux deux auteurs, que toute cité est impensable sans un système de croyance. L'athéisme celui que professent les philosophes des Lumières est alors aussi funeste qu'aristocratique, plein de mépris pour un peuple marqué par sa condition malheureuse et à qui la religion apporte réconfort. Si le montage juridique du contrat social peut être compris comme figurant la raison du citoyen, la religion civile qui ne peut cependant pas être le christianisme en est le c ur. |

| Summary, etc. | In Rousseau or Robespierre, the relation between religion and politics, far from being antagonistic, is intimate. From civil religion to the cult of the Supreme Being, both authors drew from their common Latin culture the idea that a city without any belief system is unthinkable. Atheism of the kind professed by the philosophers of the French Enlightment, is fatal as well as replete with an aristocratic contempt for the people who find in religion some relief from their miserable condition. Whereas the legal construction of the social contract may be understood as representing the reason of the citizens, civil religion (which cannot be christianism, though) is their very heart. |
