| Summary, etc. | RésuméMille malentendus et préjugés pèsent sur la nature de la technique vue par le traducteur et sur le rôle de celui-ci, personnage baroque qui n’est jamais exactement là où on l’attend. Les critères de forme immédiats de cet artisanat sont a priori ceux de tout texte technique : exhaustivité, monosémie, précision et accessibilité à l’ensemble de la communauté visée. Ils tendent vers la production d’un texte d’arrivée nettement plus standardisé que l’original. Orienté vers son utilisateur, le texte traduit doit être pensé comme une machine. Sa production fait appel à un imaginaire technique lui-même standardisé, fondé sur les mathématiques et la géométrie, et dont les règles s’apparentent à celles de l’architecture moderne. |

| Summary, etc. | Translators are baroque characters inherently out of place. The way they look at technique and their very role in the translation process are layered with countless misunderstanding and prejudices. The craft of technical translation exhibits four aesthetical characteristics which, in a perfect world, would also be those of any technical text: exhaustiveness, monosemy, precision, and collective accessibility. More often than not, the output is much more standardized than the input was. The translated text is user-oriented and has to be seen as a machine. Its production summons up a technical imagination, also highly standardized, based on mathematics and geometry, whose rules are akin to those of modern architecture. |
