Il résume d’abord les positions caractéristiques de l’école intersubjectiviste et présente ensuite quelques usages de la notions d’empathie dans la psychanalyse américaine. Il souligne notamment que le concept d’empathie y a à la fois référé à un mode de connaissance et à une attitude qui devait favoriser la relation analytique. Il examine ensuite comment ce concept a trouvé sa place dans les positions relationnelles et créativistes des intersubjectivistes, et il s’interroge sur l’appauvrissement de la notion de subjectivité qui découle de l’occultation de l’altérité de l’inconscient qui en est corrélative |
