520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. La Seconde Guerre mondiale a mené plusieurs cinéastes français – Jean Renoir, René Clair, Marcel Carné, Julien Duvivier – à l’exil hollywoodien.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Jean Renoir, René Clair, Marcel Carné, Julien Duvivier were among the few French film directors who were brought to Hollywood due to World War Two. The way Duvivier (1896-1967) accomodated to a production system that was entirely different from the one he was used to is remarkable. His imagination, images, style encountered those of other Hollywood directors, such as the Hungarian Michael Curtiz, another European exilé. Comparing Duvivier’s Pépé le Moko (1937) and Curtiz’s Casablanca (1942) confirms that inspiration defies geographical boundaries or cultural idiosyncrasies and reveals that Hollywood might not just have been American, but cosmopolitan. The comparison may also provide an insight into the universal appeal of Hollywood’s narrative patterns.
