| Summary, etc. | Cet article revient sur le volet français et qualitatif d’une recherche européenne de méthodologie mixte portant sur les expériences du cancer. À travers 100 entretiens auprès de malades, leurs proches et les professionnel·le·s impliqué·e·s dans leur prise en charge et 400 observations in situ réalisées dans cinq établissements de soins, il explore la manière dont le genre intervient dans le travail du malade et les expériences de soins. L’analyse se déploie en trois temps. Dans une première partie, la reproduction des normes de genre est interrogée à partir d’un double paradoxe : la « vulnérabilité » apparente des femmes se couple à une résistance sociale et relationnelle forte, là où l’endurance supposée des hommes laisse souvent place à des subjectivités affaiblies. Dans une deuxième partie, les ajustements de genre que la maladie initie sont discutés afin de distinguer ce qui, en termes de masculinités et de féminités plurielles, contribue à la mise en place des stratégies visant à tenir tête à la maladie. Enfin, dans une troisième et dernière partie, les relations de soins sont scrutées à partir de ce double mouvement qui oscille entre reproduction normative et ajustements de genre situés. |

| Summary, etc. | When cancer meets genderThis article studies the qualitative component of the French section of a mixed methodology European research program on experiences of cancer. Drawing on 100 interviews with cancer patients, their families, and the professionals involved in treating them and 400 in situ observations in five different treatment centers, it explores how gender intervenes in the work the patient needs to do and in treatment experiences. There are three sections to the analysis. In the first, we probe the reproduction of gender norms in this area in terms of a two-sided paradox: women’s apparent “vulnerability” goes together with strong social and relational resistance, whereas the supposed endurance of men often gives way to weakened subjectivities. In the second part we discuss the gender-related adjustments brought about by the disease in order to distinguish what aspects of plural versions of masculinity and femininity help patients develop strategies for standing up to the disease. In the third part, we examine relations between patients and treatment givers on the basis of this oscillation between norm reproduction and situated gender adjustments. |

A través de 100 entrevistas a enfermos, sus familiares y las profesionales sanitarias implicadas en su seguimiento médico, y de 400 observaciones in situ realizadas en cinco centros sanitarios, detallamos cómo el género interviene en el oficio del enfermo y la forma de encararse con las curas. El análisis se desarrolla en tres etapas. En una primera parte, cuestionamos la reproducción de las normas de género a partir de una paradoja doble: la aparente “vulnerabilidad” de las mujeres va a la par con una resistencia social y relacional fuerte, allí donde la supuesta resistencia de los hombres a menudo se convierte en subjetividades debilitadas. En una segunda parte, interrogamos los ajustes de género iniciados por la enfermedad para distinguir aquello que, en términos de masculinidades y feminidades plurales contribuye en la elaboración de estrategias destinadas a lidiar con la enfermedad. Finalmente la tercera y postrera parte observa las relaciones de cuidados a partir del movimiento doble que oscila entre reproducción normativa y ajustes de género ubicados. |

| Summary, etc. | Dieser Artikel kommt zurück auf den französischen qualitativen Teil einer europäischen gemischten methodologischen Forschung zu den Erfahrungen von Krebskranken. Ausgehend von 100 Unterredungen mit Krebskranken, ihren Angehörigen und dem Fachpersonal zur Krankenbetreuung, sowie 400 in situ-Beobachtungen in fünf Pflegeeinrichtungen, untersucht dieser Artikel, wie das Gender in der Krankenarbeit und die Pflegeerfahrungen eingreift. Die Analyse geht über drei Schritte. Im ersten Schritt wird die Reproduktion der Gendernormen anhand eines Doppelparadox hinterfragt: die bei Frauen scheinbare „Anfälligkeit“ verbindet sich mit einem starken sozialen und rationellen Widerstand, da, wo das Durchhaltevermögen der Männer oft für geschwächte Subjektivitäten Raum schafft. In einem zweiten Schritt werden die von der Krankheit eingeleiteten Genderanpassungen diskutiert, um zu unterscheiden, was innerhalb der mehrfachen Begriffe der Männlichkeit und der Weiblichkeit dazu beitragt, Strategien einzubringen, die darauf zielen, der Krankheit Stirn zu bieten. Schließlich werden in einem dritten Schritt die Pflegebeziehungen untersucht, ausgehend von dieser Doppelbewegung zwischen normativer Reproduktion und situierten Genderanpassungen. |
