520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This essay focuses on the reception of antebellum slave narratives. While recognizing that slave narratives were predominantly directed toward a white middle-class northern audience, I argue that their intended and actual readership included other groups such as Southerners, African Americans, and children. Drawing on a variety of primary sources I study some of the ways these groups may have read and understood the narratives.
