| Summary, etc. | Cet article examine les évolutions contemporaines du chômage à partir de la délimitation de ses frontières. Cette perspective s’appuie sur les acquis des analyses socio-historiques en vue de montrer le caractère évolutif, fluctuant ou processuel de ses frontières. Partant de l’hypothèse que le travail des frontières du chômage est dual, l’analyse porte tour à tour sur sa dimension institutionnelle et biographique. La première met l’accent sur la dynamique des normes et règles au principe de la délimitation des statuts et de la régulation de l’accès à des ressources matérielles (indemnisation, mesures de la politique de l’emploi) notamment. La seconde privilégie les expériences et identifications alimentant les significations investies dans la condition de chômeur (appartenance, revendication identitaire) et les projections d’avenir (positions accessibles valorisées). Ces deux types de frontières évoluent dans des directions contradictoires, respectivement de rétrécissement et d’élargissement du chômage. Aussi, ces mouvements opposés conduisent à interroger l’endurance de la catégorie même de chômage. |

| Summary, etc. | The objective of this text is to examine the current evolutions of unemployment by focusing on the delimitation of its boundaries. This perspective, based on the conclusions of several socio-historical analyses, argues that its boundaries should be considered as progressive, fluctuating, and processual. The main hypothesis is that work on the boundaries of unemployment is dual. We successively examine this dynamic in its institutional and then its biographical dimension. The first dimension refers to the dynamics of norms and rules contributing to the establishment of social and legal statutes and to access to material resources (unemployment benefits, employment policies) particularly. The second dimension focuses on subjective experiences and identifications, including the meanings invested in the status of being unemployed (affiliations, identity claims) and projections for the future (reachable and valued positions). These two types of boundaries evolve contradictorily, with—respectively—a decrease and an increase in unemployment. Eventually, these opposite movements lead to a questioning of the endurance of the unemployment category. |
