| Summary, etc. | This study looks at the social process of building trust in Bitcoin within a nearby local community. Our empirical setting is the coastal village of El Zonte in El Salvador, where the cryptocurrency was introduced by an evangelical organization in mid-2019. Contrary to the ideology of Bitcoin, which posits that trust in the algorithm can replace trust in a third party, the results of our study show that trust in this currency remains socially constructed. |

Notre terrain empirique est le village côtier d’El Zonte au Salvador, où la cryptomonnaie a été introduite par une organisation évangélique mi-2019. Contrairement à l’idéologie du Bitcoin, qui postule que la confiance dans l’algorithme peut remplacer la confiance dans un tiers, les résultats de notre étude montrent que la confiance dans cette monnaie reste socialement construite. |
