| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Depuis le XIIIe siècle, les Messins vivent dans le cadre d’une république oligarchique au sein du Saint-Empire. S’appuyant sur une histoire ancienne, ils perçoivent leur ville comme une communauté indépendante et autonome. Cette conscience municipale, source d’unité, prend racine dans la prospérité messine des origines, dans une position géostratégique et linguistique particulière au sein de l’Empire et dans une opposition sans cesse renouvelée aux princes territoriaux. Cependant, à l’orée des Temps modernes, ce tableau d’ensemble se modifie. Face à la germanisation de l’Empire, au déclin économique et au début de la Réforme, le lien social se dénoue peu à peu dans toutes les couches de la population. Le IVe tome de la chronique de Philippe de Vigneulles (1471-1528), consacré aux 25 premières années du XVIe siècle, nous permet de saisir la fragilité de cette conscience municipale. L’auteur nous décrit ainsi une période d’indétermination où la ville n’est déjà plus dans un mode de lien social médiéval, mais pas encore dans celui d’un attachement plus transcendant à une dynastie et à un sentiment national moderne. Au milieu du gué la cité navigue alors à vue, ballottée par les événements extérieurs. Au terme de ses ambiguïtés et de ses incertitudes elle échouera en 1552 – plus qu’elle ne choisira vraiment – sur la rive du royaume de France. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT Since the XIIIth century, the inhabitants of Metz had lived in an oligarchic republic inside the Holy Roman Empire. Referring to an age-long history, they had considered their city as an independent and autonomous community. This city awareness, working as a source of unity, had stemmed from the original prosperity of Metz, a particular geostrategic and linguistic position within the Empire and ever-renewed opposition to territorial princes. However, at the dawn of Modern Times the whole situation changed. Confronted with the germanisation of the Empire, the economic recession and the beginning of the Reform, social bonds became ever looser in all the strata of the population. Volume Four of Philippe de Vigneulles’s (1471-1528) chronicles, which is devoted to the first quarter of the XVIth century, allows us to grasp how fragile this city awareness was. The author described times of uncertainty when the city no longer lived according to medieval social bonds, although it was not yet more thoroughly attached to a dynasty and a modern national feeling. Caught in the throngs of external events, the city had to blindly nose its way past dire straits. In 1552, after many an ambiguity and uncertainty, it grounded – out of luck rather than out of real choice – along the shore of the French kingdom. |
