| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Au gré des missions de ses membres dans les départements et aux armées, mais aussi en fonction des congés et de diverses absences, la Convention nationale a très souvent été amputée d’une partie importante de son effectif théorique. Mettant au jour un absentéisme politique considérable dans cette Assemblée au printemps 1793, au moment décisif de la lutte entre Girondins et Montagnards, cet article évoque la volonté de plusieurs dizaines de députés de se tenir avec soin à l’écart des affrontements partisans. Une telle position, qui fait souvent naître a posteriori une autre mise à l’écart politique, a été interprétée par l’historiographie comme la marque d’un « centre » composé de modérés aussi peu dignes d’intérêt les uns que les autres. Cet article suggère au contraire que de nouvelles études puissent être ouvertes sur l’existence d’un « centre » au sein de la Convention nationale, afin de lui redonner sa véritable place et d’en cerner toutes les nuances. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT At the mercy of its members on mission to the departments and the army, as well as leaves and absences of one sort or another, the National Convention was often deprived of an important part of its theoretical manpower. This article brings to light the considerable absenteeism in the Convention during Spring 1793, at the moment when the Girondin-Montagnard struggle reached its decisive moment. The article examines the desire of tens of deputies to stay away from partisan confrontations, a position often made a posteriori by historiography as another political dismissal. Often interpreted as the centrism of moderates unworthy of scholarly interest, this article suggests that new vistas can be opened on the Convention’s moderates, and that by restoring its place in the Revolution, some historical loose ends will be tied up. |
