| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Jusqu’au début du XIXe siècle, l’abbaye de Westminster, près de Londres, a accueilli la dépouille mortelle de la plupart des rois et de reines d’Angleterre. Jusqu’au début du XVIIe siècle, les funérailles royales, dont l’abbaye est demeurée le cadre, mettaient en scène la fameuse effigie représentant le défunt qui a inspiré les travaux d’Ernst Kantorowicz et un tombeau monumental était généralement érigé en l’honneur du souverain décédé. À partir du règne de Jacques Ier, ces trois corps du roi ont progressivement disparu de l’abbaye de Westminster. L’évolution de la pensée et des pratiques politiques anglaises a joué un rôle dans ce phénomène, mais la commercialisation accrue de l’abbaye, que sa fonction de nécropole royale puis nationale a transformé en l’un des principaux lieux touristiques de la capitale pour le plus grand profit de ses administrateurs, n’a pas été sans un effet parfaitement perçu par les contemporains. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT Until the beginning of the nineteen-century, Westminster Abbey, in the surroundings of London, have been the site where the corpses of almost all the kings and queens of England have been buried. Until the beginning of the seventeenth-century, the Abbey have also been the place of the royal funerals, which used the famous effigy representing the dead king, which have inspired Ernst Kantorowicz with his major work. A splendid monument was built to celebrate him as well. By the reign of James the First, these three bodies of the king have disappeared one by one from Westminster Abbey. It is partially linked with the evolutions of the political thought and of the political life of the kingdom of England but the process of commercialisation, due to its very function of royal repository, which has transformed the Abbey in a tourist place, could have also played a major role. |
