| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Il faut remettre en cause une certaine vulgate concernant le prétendu « illibéralisme » de la pensée républicaine de la décennie révolutionnaire. Pour cela, le phénomène électoral observé à plusieurs niveaux – la législation, les pratiques, les débats – est un bon test. Certaines avancées légales, dont on souligne complaisamment l’échec, comme le problème des candidatures, doivent être relativisées. Certaines pratiques, comme les scissions d’assemblées, ne relèvent certainement pas d’une culture pluraliste. En revanche, les débats sur les validations électorales de 1797 à 1799 sont d’une très grande richesse, et révèlent que l’un des enjeux était bien le pluralisme politique. Ce dernier peut s’exprimer par le respect du principe majoritaire, ou par la compétition de minorités organisées. Il est explicitement revendiqué lorsque le coup d’État de Brumaire vint interrompre une réflexion marquée par l’expérimentation, et empreinte de pragmatisme. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT It is necessary to question a certain dogma regarding the alleged « illiberalism » of republican thought during the revolutionnary decade. For that purpose, a proper test consists in observing the electoral phenomena at several levels, i.e. legislation, practices, and debates. Some legal developments, which failure has been amply emphasized, shall be reconsidered and absolutely do not characterize a pluralist culture. On the other hand, debates regarding validations of the election results that took place between 1797 and 1799 are of great interest and bring to light the fact that political pluralism was a major issue. This pluralism may take the form of implementation of the majority principle, or competition between organized minorities. Political pluralism was explicitly asserted when the « coup » of Brumaire interrupted the reflection process which was characterized by experimentation and dominated by pragmatism. |
