| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ À la fin du XIXe, dans un contexte de compétition multiforme entre les grandes nations, la culture devint à la fois un des enjeux de la puissance et une de ses mesures. Ainsi la fondation, en 1883, de l’Alliance française, « association nationale pour la propagation de la langue française dans les colonies et à l’étranger », traduisit la volonté de certaines élites française, intellectuelles et administratives au premier chef, d’assurer à leur pays les conditions renouvelées de son traditionnel « rayonnement » culturel. Grâce à des Comités locaux, presque totalement indépendants du siège central parisien, un réseau mondial et décentralisé apparaît en une vingtaine d’années. À travers une politique de soutien aux écoles et au livre français, l’organisation de tournées de conférences, et surtout, la mise en œuvre, à Paris, de cours de langue et civilisation d’un haut niveau intellectuel, l’Alliance française de Paris et ses Comités à l’étranger inventèrent le dispositif de la diplomatie culturelle moderne, avant même l’apparition des premiers Instituts culturels français vers 1910. Les représentations idéales d’une langue et d’une culture françaises de type universaliste s’inscrivirent au sein de ce jeu de pratiques multiples qui furent mises en œuvre par des acteurs français aussi bien qu’étrangers. Et cette souplesse demeura un des principaux atouts d’une association, souvent enviée, parfois copiée, mais demeurée difficilement imitable. |

L’Alliance française, founded in 1883, « national association for propagating french language in colonies and abroad », incarnated the will of some french elites, above all intellectual and administrative ones, to ensure France the renewed conditions of his ancient cultural « radiance ». Owing to local Comities, almost independent of Paris, a world-wide network appear for twenty years. Through sustaining french schools and french book, the organisation of conference trips, and above all the creation of language and civilisation curses, in Paris, l’Alliance française of Paris and her local Comities abroad invented the apparatus of modern cultural diplomacy, even before the apparition of the first french Institutes about 1910. Ideal representations of language and french universal culture were inscribed amid this game of multiple practices created by some french and foreign actors. And this suppleness were one of the principal trumps of this association, often envied, sometimes copied, but stayed unesasily imitable. |
