| Summary, etc. | RESUME Albert Thibaudet (1874-1936), avant même d’être le critique célèbre de La Nouvelle Revue française de 1912 jusqu’à sa mort à la veille du Front populaire, est un européiste convaincu, pacifique et non pacifiste. Ce grand voyageur, ouvert aux littératures européennes, se montre hostile à l’égard de la politique rhénane du Bloc national ainsi qu’au nationalisme intransigeant de Poincaré ou de Barrès, jugé inadapté et dangereux après le traité de Versailles ( Les princes lorrains, 1924). Participant aux périodiques pro-européens, membre de l’Institut international de coopération intellectuelle, il enseigne à l’Université de Genève à partir de 1924 et il devient un observateur privilégié de l’âge d’or de la Société des Nations dans laquelle il fonde de grands espoirs. Il constate l’enlisement et la faillite de l’institution, alors que la dictature devient « l’état normal de l’Europe et de l’Asie » ( Les idées politiques de la France, 1932). |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT Albert Thibaudet (1874-1936), even before he can be viewed as the famous reviewer of La Nouvelle Revue française – from 1912 to his death on the eve of the Popular Front –, is a convinced Europe enthusiast, a peace-loving man yet not a pacifist This great traveller, who is open to European literary works, shows strong disapproval of the Rhine-oriented policy led by the Bloc national He is equally hostile to the uncompromising brand of nationalism of a Poincaré or a Barrès, which he deems dangerous and not adapted after the Treaty of Versailles (Les Princes lorrains, 1924). A contributor to pro-European periodicals, a member of the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation, he teaches at the University of Geneva as of 1924 and becomes a privileged observer of the heyday of the League of Nations, on which he places high hopes He records how the institution gets bogged down and fails, while dictatorship becomes “the normal state of Europe and Asia » (Les Idées politiques de la France, 1932). |
