| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Parmi les vertus dont un empereur romain se devait de faire preuve figurait la liberalitas. Aux trois premiers siècles du Principat, celle-ci pouvait prendre des formes variées. Nous avons décidé de nous intéresser à un type de largesses bien particulier : les grandes distributions exceptionnelles d’argent, de nourriture, de vêtements et d’objets divers appelées sparsiones de missilia. Le but de cet article est de mettre en évidence la façon dont ces bienfaits étaient accordés et ce qu’ils symbolisaient. Répondre à cette question met en évidence le rôle de Fortuna dans la répartition des lots. C’est ce qui fait en partie la singularité de ces types de dons grâce auxquels le prince apparaissait comme un bienfaiteur tout-puissant. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT The Roman emperor was expected to practise liberalitas, one of the imperial virtues. During the first three centuries of the Principate, imperial liberalitas included different types of bounties. We decided to focus on the public distributions of money, food, clothes and various objects called sparsiones of missilia . This article aims at explaining the way these benefactions were conferred and what they symbolized. It makes obvious the rôle played by Fortuna in the sharing out of the different kinds of goods. The originality of these gifts partly consists in their hazardous repartition. Thanks to them, the Prince also appeared as an omnipotent benefactor. |
